Students with disabilities should not incur expenses that are not incurred by other students. Therefore the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) assist students with disability-related costs. The following financial assistance is available to UOIT students who have a disability:
Bursary for Students with Disabilities
Students who qualify for the Ontario Student Assistance Pprogram (OSAP) may also apply for the Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD), which is funded jointly by the federal and provincial governments. This bursary provides up to $2,000 per academic year for academic supports and services.
Your application for the bursary is submitted by your learning strategies counsellor or accessibility advisor at UOIT. The Student Awards and Financial Aid (SAFA) office administers the bursary, which includes distribution of your cheque. Do not incur any expenses you wish to pay for from the bursary before you have applied for the bursary, as these receipts cannot be accepted.
Funding covers disability-related costs that are not covered by OSAP, such as psychoeducational assessment, tutors, or the purchase of assistive devices such as software or digital recorders. Funding cannot be used for books, housing, tuition or personal expenses. Unlike OSAP, this bursary does not need to be repaid.
Recipients of this bursary must keep their receipts for audit.
You are encouraged to apply for OSAP, even if at the beginning of the school year you believe you have sufficient funds to cover your costs.
Other financial assistance
You may also qualify for financial assistance, scholarships or bursaries that are open to all students. More information can be found on the Money Matters section of the UOIT website.
Other awards specifically for students with disabilities
The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) has an excellent page to search for bursaries and awards that may apply to you. Every year thousands of dollars are unclaimed because no one applied – the recipient might as well be you! Please check the site periodically and be mindful of application deadlines.
