Visiting Elders program

Since 2014, Indigenous Student Services has provided UOIT with a Visiting Elders program one week each semester. Every student, staff and faculty member is encouraged to drop in to the centre, book an appointment or schedule a classroom visit during the Elder's stay.

Indigenous Elders are respected members of their communities. They do not acquire the title due to their age, as commonly believed, but are recognized because they carry much knowledge and have the life experience of wisdom, harmony and balance, which they are able to share with others.

Hours of availability will vary.

To book a one-on-one appointment, schedule a classroom visit or get more information about the program, please email Jill Thompson, Indigenous Cultural Advisor.

Fall 2016

For the first semester this year, we are bringing in Senator Verna Porter-Brunelle of the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario.  Verna is a highly respected and much loved Elder in her community.

Verna will be at UOIT during from October 3 to 7, 2016. She will be based at the UBISC (downtown Oshawa location, 151 Athol Street East) but will be available for lectures and one-on-one discussions with students at the downtown and north Oshawa locations.

To book an appointment with Verna, where you will have the opportunity to ask any questions about traditions and culture of Indigenous peoples, her advocacy work or another subject, email Jill Thompson at

Verna will also be attending and Lunch and Learn on Monday, October 3 from noon to 1 at the UBISC at 151 Athol Street East.
