Visiting Elders program

Since 2014, Indigenous Student Services has provided UOIT with a Visiting Elders program one week each semester. Every student, staff and faculty member is encouraged to drop in to the centre, book an appointment or schedule a classroom visit during the Elder's stay.

Indigenous Elders are respected members of their communities. They do not acquire the title due to their age, as commonly believed, but are recognized because they carry much knowledge and have the life experience of wisdom, harmony and balance, which they are able to share with others.

During their visit to UOIT, the Visiting Elder will be available for one-on-one or group appointments with students, staff, and faculty, and visit classrooms for lectures, hold Lunch and Learns, and visit community partners.

Hours of availability will vary.

To book a one-on-one appointment, schedule a classroom visit or get more information about the program, please email Jill Thompson, Indigenous Cultural Advisor.
