September Start


iBegin is designed to promote your personal success at university. It takes place in late July and early August. This one-day faculty-specific orientation is geared towards students, and their parents and families, who will also learn about the first-year student experience and how to best support student success.

Smart Start

Smart Start an academic transition program co-ordinated by the Student Learning Centre. It provides new university students with a head start in their university career.

Smart Start includes an introduction to:

  • Active study strategies.
  • Common assignments.
  • Managing university expectations.
  • Math and/or writing review.
  • Mental-health strategies.
  • Note-taking skills.
  • Planning and time management.
  • Q&A with upper-year students.
  • Research skills.

Ignite is the university's largest orientation specifically geared toward students who are beginning classes in September. The university's Fall Orientation activities provide fun and exciting opportunities for all incoming students in the university's diverse student population. Ignite is a not only a great way to make new friends prior to starting classes, but it also allows students the opportunity to explore campus and learn about the university's vibrant campus culture.

International Student Orientation (ISO) is an orientation specifically designed for incoming international, exchange and visiting students, in both graduate and undergraduate programs at the university. Topics covered in ISO are not the same as those in the Graduate Student Orientation. It is highly recommended that students attend all orientations that are relevant to their cohort.

The Summer Transition Program (STP), co-ordinated by Student Accessibility Services (SAS), provides incoming students with documented disabilities with the resources and information necessary to make a successful transition into university. All parents or guardians of students attending the STP are invited to attend an information session to learn about the campus supports available to their students.
